On Twitter, over 1,000 users claimed that they or their family, friends had been infected with the coronavirus in December 2019 or even earlier.
"My wife and doctor are both convinced that I had COVID-19 on October 1, 2019," wrote a Washington resident named Jamie Kattenhofen in a tweet on December 22, 2020.
In November 2020, researchers at the National Cancer Institute in Milan, Italy, published a paper in the journal "Tumori" stating that they tested blood samples from 959 volunteers participating in lung cancer screening trials from September 2019 to March 2020. The results showed that 111 volunteers had specific antibodies to the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the coronavirus in their blood samples, with the earliest sample collected in the first week of October 2019, indicating that they likely contracted the coronavirus in September 2019.
